For more information about service times and locations go to our website or call us at 212-854-5111. Reform High Holy Day services are held at the Kraft Center. For Conservative & Orthodox services, local synagogues and the Jewish Theological Seminary provide free tickets. We have two Sukkot [traditional booths in which we eat during the festival of Sukkot]; one at the McIntosh Student Center on the Barnard campus and the other on the terrace of the Kraft Center.
While Columbia and Barnard hold classes on Jewish holidays, the official University policy states that no one is to be penalized because of religious observance.
A full Kosher dining program is located in the Hewitt Cafeteria at Barnard College and serves the entire University community. Students can join the board plan or pay on a cash basis (first years in are required to be on a full board plan). Meals at Barnard are available seven days a week including Shabbat and Holidays. A more limited kosher program is available at Columbia's John Jay Dining Hall for the first time this year. The supervision of both the Barnard and Columbia kosher plans is handled by Rabbi Ian Shaffer of Hillel. The nearby Jewish Theological Seminary also has a kosher cafeteria. In addition, many local supermarkets carry a wide variety of kosher foods and The Hartley Kosher Deli is right on campus.
